Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service
I am pleased to introduce the 46th edition of the Civil Service Year Book. The
Civil Service as an organisation is constantly changing: this directory is
therefore an invaluable guide for any office that deals with Government.
This year has of course brought a change of Prime Minister, as Gordon Brown
replaces Tony Blair after ten years. Our role as Civil Servants, however,
remains constant: to serve government and the public to the highest possible
standard. Civil Servants across Great Britain perform work which is vital to
every area of public life: from delivering front-line services, to tackling climate
change, to defending national security.
With every year we face new challenges and must continue to evolve, making
the service we offer government and citizens both more efficient and more
relevant.
The Civil Service Capability Reviews, published over the last year, are an
excellent example of the former, aiming to improve the delivery of public
service targets in each department. Our continuing work on Diversity is an
attempt to approach the latter, making our organisation more representative
of the society it serves.
I am proud of what we as a Civil Service deliver. You will find the people
behind it all in the following pages.
